1. Purpose
This policy outlines the principles, standards, and processes governing
assessments and examinations to ensure they are fair, valid, reliable, and aligned with programme learning outcomes. It aims to uphold academic integrity and support continuous improvement in teaching and learning.
2. Scope
This policy applies to all assessed components—formative and summative—across all programmes and modules delivered by the institution, including written exams, practical assessments, coursework, projects, and online assessments.
3. Guiding Principles
- Assessments must measure intended learning outcomes effectively.
- Assessment methods must be appropriate, transparent, and clearly communicated
to students.
- Examinations must be conducted with fairness, consistency, and strict adherence
to academic integrity.
- Feedback should be timely, constructive, and support student learning
improvement.
- Compliance with regulatory and institutional quality assurance requirements is
mandatory.
4. Responsibilities
The Examination Board will be in charge of the development of examination and assessment procedures, such as developing and facilitating the implementation of
procedures to:
- Ensure the security of examination scripts and answer scripts:
- Ensure the proper conduct of examinations and assessments;
- Define and ensure the proper discharge of duties and responsibilities of
invigilators and markers;
- Conduct moderation of examination and assessment marks: and
- Handle appeals from students with regard to examination or assessment
matters.
5. Assessment Design and Implementation
- Assessment plans must be developed for each module, specifying criteria,
methods, weightage, and learning outcomes.
- Students must receive assessment information at the start of the course.
- Assessments must undergo internal moderation to ensure fairness and alignment
with standards.
- Alternative assessments may be provided for valid reasons (e.g., medical grounds)
with approval.
6. Examination Conduct
- Examinations under the Academic & Exams Board shall follow scheduling,
invigilation, room setup, identity verification, and timekeeping.
- Academic misconduct (cheating, plagiarism, collusion, impersonation) is strictly
prohibited and subject to disciplinary action.
- Students must follow exam instructions and maintain proper conduct at all times.
7. Grading, Moderation, and Release of Results
- All results must undergo internal moderation and review before approval by the
Examination/Assessment Committee.
- Final results must be endorsed by the Academic Board.
- Students shall be notified of results within the published timeline.
8. Appeals and Reassessment
- Students may appeal examination or assessment results based on specific
grounds (e.g., procedural error, misgrading).
- Reassessment or resubmission may be offered where applicable and subject to
programme rules.
- All appeals must be submitted within the 3 days.
9. Documentation and Record Keeping
All assessment records, exam papers, answer scripts, moderation reports, and
result summaries must be stored securely with clear version control and retention timelines.
